Friends and babies

Ah, a lovely weekend visiting friends (and their children). Also went swimming for the first time in ages in Tina and Roy’s lovely swimming pool (indoor and heated). Lots of fun had by all and after Rob swam four lengths underwater (I could only manage two) I do believe I need to get more exercise to improve my cardiovascular subsystem :-)

On a related subject, here is the first of (hopefully) many ideas I’ll be writing down. I often think of things “wouldn’t it be a good idea if..” or “I wonder what would happen if…”, generally when I’m trying to fall asleep but Mr brain won”t switch off.

Today’s thought is “nappy monitoring”. Given the number of times Rob and/or Jane checked Eddie for “freshness” I thought there must be a better way. Originally I wondered about something like cobalt cloride, but I’m not sure how toxic etc it might be, but in reality you would probably need some capilliary tubes/material to wick the water from the test area (next to baby) through to the outside of the nappy where it could be seen. Instead of cobalt chloride some dye would probably work as it would spread and become noticable (assuming it started in some fine powder/granule form). Lastly you would want the outside of the nappy to be waterproof (to prevent baby rolling in water/mud creating a false alarm).

Instead of this low-tech approach, you could take the high tech approach, perhaps some simple resistance testing to either a flat LED or even an external alarm. Depending upon cost this could be reusable - perhaps a radio alarm with half a dozen small emitters powered by tiny batteries?
