Two fixes to machines
(Ignoring rebuilding laptop after falling down the stairs…)
Fallout from upgrading X windows to the modular 7.0 was having to change the FontPaths in /etc/X11/xorg.conf from “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/…” to “/usr/share/fonts/X11/…”. Took a while to find that – it kepts complaining that it couldn’t find “fixed” font. So I had hacked around it (with fonts.aliases) but then I had a very small cursor (quarter of the normal size).
The other item was I couldn’t hear any sound from my desktop. Eventually I tried a different mixer (gamix) and it showed that “Monitor” was turned on. I turned this off and tada – working sound. Shame that alsamixer doesn’t seem to show this setting anywhere. Update: it is listed as “IEC958 capture monitor” which should be muted.
