Server upgrade

Well my trusty server has been having a bit of a harsh time recently - the disks keep dropping offline (both of them - even though they are different channels). Given that I am keen on network security, the fact that it only has one PCI slot was also an issue.

However the fact that it didn’t support hardware virtualisation is a bigger problem for me - sice I’m dropping xen. This last week though the server has become very troublesome - crashing regularly (memory is fine) in such a way (segfaults etc) that I know it’s a hardware problem. Then it refused to power on (an issue I had with it a few months ago). This time I cabled a spare PSU to it (being a mini PC it has a non-standard PSU so it has the donor PC leant against it at an angle).

So today I’ve specced up what I’m going to do:

  • old P35 motherboard (I had problems with the graphics card but couldn’t eliminate the mobo)
  • core 2 E7200 processor - this 2.53GHz CPU will actually go into my desktop and I’ll put the 1.83GHz processor from that into the sever
  • 2×2GB RAM (tempting to get more memory for desktop too!)
  • SeaSonic S12-330 PSU (efficient and quiet)
  • probably a new case too

I’ve decided not to get any hard disks ATM, I think one is going to die shortly, but I’ll wait until then :-)
