OTA updates

My parents Freeview box no longer receives BBC One or BBC Two.

They live up in Cheshire and a while ago the Freeview channels were updated with a [http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=903723 split-NIT], when they retuned the TV following the recent Freeview channel changes (and also for them the analogue switch off), no longer can they receive all the channels. Sony won’t fix it unless they send someone out and they’ll charge you for it. Nice. A freeview TV that doesn’t work. Pathetic and another reason not to buy Sony if that’s how they value their customers. The least they could have done is advise them (since they were aware of the problem and my parents had registered the TV with them).

Their Humax PVR has continued to get worse (and I’m tired of telling them to take it back) – it now crashes every day, not just every few weeks. Apparently Humax are “aware” of this and are working on a fix – but again – is nothing tested these days?

This leads onto the subject matter – Over The Air updates. I wonder if there is any authentication performed. Or can I setup a transmitter and wipe the firmware of Sony TVs within “earshot”. I’m talking strong authentication, not just a checksum or model match. i.e. to prevent malicious attacks.
